In addition to sails, you can land tuna, dorado, roosterfish, and 25 other species of fighting fish in the deepsea waters offshore of, Los Suenos, Quepos, and Guanacaste. Only the top boat captains and the best boats regularly bring in 10-20 sails a day.
The “Season of the Sail” takes off in December, when these and other big ones begin moving north from Panama. They reach the Quepos Manuel Antonio area by mid-December. January is among the top months for this species. However, it is possible to take sails all through out the year. You will usually have to go farther out to sea, and luck will play an even greater role than during the season.
By April or May, the sails are swimming north to the Nicoya coast and Guanacaste. The biggest sportfishing tournaments in the country are staged here in June and July, because these are the best months for this species.
Playa del Coco is perfectly situated for sailfishing the Guanacaste and Nicoya fisheries, because the boats can handily reach any of the local hot spots. Hotels in downtown Quepos or Manuel Antonio are equally convenient to reaching the local pier by taxi, shuttle or rental car.
