Deep sea fishing equipment — you need the right deep sea fishing equipment and tackle when offshore sportfishing in Costa Rica, Florida, Mexico, Hawaii or any where else on the planet.
And aboard our Charters, your saltwater adventure for marlin and sailfish is always assured by our thorough complement of tackle designed specifically for these big billfish. Our Fishing Charters also carries everything you need to land other species too, from tuna to Mahi Mahi, from wahoo to snapper. There are over 2 dozen kinds of gamefish off Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, and most anglers keep comin’ back even after they have caught one of each!
here are two basic types of gear that are utilized for offshore, saltwater sportfishing: the hardware that is physically attached to the boat itself (outriggers, for example, and the gear that is part of the handheld items, such as the rod, reel, line and lures).
When you look at the boat’s hardware, you first see the long, tall outriggers on either side of the craft. From these dangle the long lines that are used when you are trolling conventionally. Also aboard are downriggers, which use weights to keep the lines deeper than the flat lines, in order to fish at several depths simultaneously.
Rods and reels vary in many ways, but brand names such as Penn International and Shamano cannot be topped. Basically, the bigger the fish, the heavier the rod and the bigger the reel. A lightweight rig is used to fish for live bait if the occasion calls for live bait, as in a feeding frenzy.
Flyfishing calls for even more exotic hardware, the which is usually supplied by these serious anglers, as practice with different models is recommended.
Here are a few tackle related terms and bits of jargon that you might hear while on your next charter:
Super Chugger, Bowling Pin, Wave Ranger, Hooker, Diver: lures used primarily for high speed trolling
Leader: the line that is attached to the hook. The leader is snapped onto the rod’s line with a snap swivel.
Right rigger! Flat line! Port teaser! Reel! Reel! Reel! — you will hear these shouts alert everyone of a strike and what to do (Reel! Reel! Reel!).
Teaser: a baitless, hookless lure designed to attract the attention of the prey
Bimini twist: a new dance from the Bahamas, or a tropical drink? No, the Bimini Twist is just another one of the many knots mastered by the crew of the Predator.
